Waitangi Tribunal: Haumaru Covid-19 Priority Inquiry Report

The Waitangi Tribunal has today released its Priority Report where it inquired into whether the Covid-19 vaccination strategy and plan and Covid Protection Framework (Traffic Light System) were consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles.

Waitangi Tribunal: Justice Kaupapa Inquiry to Commence

The Waitangi Tribunal has confirmed it will fast-track an inquiry into claims by Māori relating to the administration of the justice system.
To date a number of claims have been filed which include issues such as a lack of recognition of tikanga Māori as a source of law in the common law regime; discrimination against Māori in the statutory
and institutional framework for the administration of justice
in colonial and modern times; institutional racism and bias
in the policy and practice of justice sector organisations;
access to justice, including legal aid ... and claimant
funding for progressing Treaty-based claims and rights;
discrimination against Māori in policing policy and practice;
and prison conditions and the treatment of Māori
remand and sentenced prisoners.

Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011

The High Court today released its Te Whakatohea No2 Judgment confirming some applicants have been successful in obtaining orders for Customary Marine Title (section 58) and Protected Customary Rights (section 51) in respect of their Takutai Moana.
